The Barton-Tiffany Lands

Location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Planners: GSP Group
Developer: City of Hamilton

The Barton-Tiffany lands are a former industrial area with some existing residential zones, within the West Harbour Secondary Planning Area of Hamilton. Proposed redevelopment plans for these lands include both commercial and residential land uses. The larger objective is to open up, revitalize and improve community access to the nearby heritage waterfront.

An Ontario Municipal Board decision allows a mixture of medium density residential uses along Barton Street and Bay Street and commercial uses on the lands within 150 metres of the adjacent Stuart Street CN Rail Yard. An Urban Design Study of the area was undertaken where heights, densities, building forms, locations, road  layout, views, open spaces, transportation access and pedestrian links to the nearby parks and historic sites will be considered.

HGC Engineering was retained to conduct a noise and vibration assessment as part of the larger Urban Design Study. The transportation noise sources which we investigated included rail traffic noise on the CN main line and road traffic noise on the major road-ways within the study area. Stationary sources of noise and vibration include the rail yard.  HGC was already familiar with the area having previously performed extensive acoustical work at the rail yard for a local developer.
