Dufferin Concrete Whitby Ready Mix Plant

Ready Mix Plant - Ontario Acoustic Assessment Report

Location: Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Owner/Operator: Dufferin Aggregates (Holcim Canada Inc.)

Dufferin Aggregates, a division of Holcim (Canada) Inc., is a leading supplier of aggregates for the construction industry in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and adjacent municipalities. The Company is a key player in the communities in which it operates.

HGC Engineering completed a site-wide Acoustic Assessment of the Whitby Ready Mix Plant in support of an application to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (“MOE”) for an Environmental Compliance Approval.

The study considered all existing acoustically significant sources at the facility. Although this Whitby plant is a relatively new member of the Dufferin Concrete family, we have completed well over  70  site-wide noise assessments for the company’s limestone quarries and sand & gravel pits across Ontario.

Facility Description:
The Whitby facility is a dual-mode (i.e. wet and dry batch) concrete batching plant. The plant operates from 7:00 to 19:00. The primary sound sources associated with the facility are the various vehicles that enter the site to deliver aggregate and cementitious materials, off-load those materials and depart, as well as vehicles that enter and depart to take away ready-mix concrete. In addition, there is a front end loader that operates in the aggregate stockpile area south of the plant.

Acoustic Assessment:
In addition to point-of-reception measurements of overall facility sound levels, we conducted comprehensive onsite measurements of noise producing equipment using superior sound intensity instrumentation and measurement techniques. A 3D acoustical model of the site and surrounding area was developed, to which the source measurement data was input in order to predict the individual contribution of each noise source to the overall sound levels of the site in the surrounding community. These overall sound levels were then evaluated with respect to the applicable limits, established in accordance with MOE guidelines
